Map European power supply and demand

PowerUnits maps the supply side today: unit-level generation assets across Europe, with storage shown as a role in the map view. Demand assets are specified but not yet mapped — this page says exactly what exists and what does not.

The protected Units Map shows reported generation units by technology and status. Wind and solar layers are off by default to keep the map legible, so the default view is not the full fleet.

Demand in PowerUnits market surfaces is zonal or national state, not facility data, and it is not placed on map assets.

What a European power supply and demand map is

A European power supply and demand map places physical electricity assets and system-level load in a geographic frame while preserving the granularity and evidence type of each.

PowerUnits currently maps unit-level generation assets, with a supply/storage role filter in the map view. It does not map demand assets.

Zonal or national demand cannot be attributed to a named facility. A demand state measured for a country or bidding zone is not evidence of what happened at a factory gate.

Evidence

Sources, attribution and unlocated capacity

The unit-level asset records come from Global Energy Monitor (GEM). Global Energy Monitor (GEM) data are licensed under CC BY 4.0.

Unit-level means one generating unit rather than a whole site. Reported capacity follows the source record without a guaranteed gross-or-net convention.

Capacity that cannot be geolocated is reported separately rather than hidden. For anyone reading an asset map, that means the map is a view of what could be placed, not an inventory of everything that exists in the source data.

Evidence boundary

Why zonal demand is not facility demand

PowerUnits has zero georeferenced demand assets. ENTSO-E demand in the repository is country- or bidding-zone state, never an asset.

Bidding-zone load is measured at the zone boundary, not at a factory gate. Placing a share of it on a facility icon would present something that was never observed.

The repository also has no bidding-zone polygons. Zonal demand therefore cannot be spatially derived and attributed to a named facility.

Generation coverage follows the Global Energy Monitor source records and the coordinates that can be used. It is not a claim of complete plant or geographic coverage.

Capacity without usable coordinates is disclosed separately. Wind and solar layers are off by default in the workspace to keep the map legible, so the default view is not the full fleet.

Zonal or national load is available in separate market surfaces. It is not a demand-asset layer and is never placed on a facility.

What supply-and-demand mapping still requires

Reviewed on 2026-08-03: demand assets and storage as a separate modelled role are specified but not yet built.

As of 2026-08-03, the Power Asset Impact Explorer is an emerging analytical workflow that would connect physical assets to market analysis. It is not available.

Limitations

What the map does not show

No individual asset's hourly behaviour is measured.

The map locates reported asset records. It does not measure the hourly generation, charging, discharging or consumption of an individual asset.

Zonal demand is never attributed to a facility.

Country- or zone-level demand is system state, not evidence about a named site.

The default view is not the full fleet.

Wind and solar layers are off by default in the workspace to keep the map legible.

Capacity semantics follow the source record.

Reported capacity has no guaranteed gross-or-net convention, and unlocated capacity is disclosed separately.
